Detailed
This study investigated a locally injectable dual-functional hydrogel system, aiming to simultaneously address periodontitis and myocardial infarction, two inflammatory diseases with a bidirectional correlation, through a single treatment approach. This work developed a novel protein-loaded antibacterial hydrogel that not only effectively controls local periodontal inflammation and promotes alveolar bone regeneration, but also, by regulating the oral microbiome-immune system axis, provides systemic treatment and repair for distant myocardial infarction, offering a new non-invasive strategy for the treatment of co-morbid diseases. The related research was published in the international journal "Bioactive Materials".
Key Innovation Points
01 Innovative Treatment Strategy
The first to propose and validate a combined treatment approach of "local periodontal injection and systemic heart repair". This strategy breaks through the limitations of traditional single-organ treatment and achieves "two birds with one stone" through intervention in the periodontal-heart inflammation axis, providing a new paradigm for the treatment of diseases with co-morbidity associations.
