Professor Nanfeng Zheng was born in Fujian in 1977. He received his B.S. from the Department of Chemistry, Xiamen University in 1998. In 2005, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Chemistry, University of California –Riverside supervised by Prof. Pingyun Feng. His thesis was on the synthesis and characterization of chalcogenide nanoclusters and their superstructures. During 2005-2007, he worked on gold catalysis with Prof. Galen D. Stucky as a research associate at University of California – Santa Barbara. In 2007, he moved to Xiamen University as a full professor. He was supported by National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2009. In 2010, he was appointed as a Changjiang Chair professor.
His research interests mainly focus on surface and interface chemistry of functional materials. He is committed to understanding the chemistry regulating the properties of functional materials at the molecular level and thus promoting their applications in the fields of catalysis, energy, environmental protection and biology. He has published 200 peer-reviewed articles with >18000 citations. He has also filed more than 20 patents. As the chief scientist of a national key R & D project, he is actively promoting the practical applications of the basic research of surface coordination chemistry to chemical industry. In 2019, the research project "surface coordination chemistry of metal nanomaterials" led by him won the second prize of National Natural Science Award of China.

He currently serves as a senior editor of ACS Central Science, and also (advisory) editorial board members of Joule, Chem, Chem. Rev., Acc. Chem. Res., Nano Research, Advanced Materials Interfaces, Science China-Chemistry, Trends in Chemistry, Small Methods, The Innovation and other journals.

Prof. Zheng Nanfeng is actively involved in the teaching and teaching reform of undergraduate and graduate courses. The teaching project "The establishment and practice of collaborative innovation training mode for research talents in energy chemistry" was awarded as the second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award of China in 2019.

Prof. Zheng has received a number of awards including the Xplorer Prize, Youth Science Award of Ministry of Education of China, Chinese Outstanding Youth Science and Technology Talent Award, Chinese Chemical Society–Royal Society of Chemistry Young Chemist Award, Chinese Chemical Society Youth Chemistry Award, Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation Award for Outstanding Young Teachers, the Distinguished Lectureship Award from the Chemical Society of Japan, the Zasshi Kai Lectureship from Department of Chemistry at the University of Tokyo, Young Investigator Award from Division of Inorganic Chemistry of American Chemistry Award.
