Professor Tang Bo, Professor Li Ping, Professor Tony D. James and Wu Luling from Shandong Normal University reviewed the application research of two-photon small molecule fluorescent reagents in biological systems for sensing, imaging and treatment.

Key points of this article:

(1) The author discussed the latest developments in the design, construction and application of two-photon excitation-based fluorescence (TPEF) small molecule probes. The advantages of TPEF-based probes include deep tissue penetration and low light Damages etc. were introduced.

(2) Subsequently, the author discussed the design strategy of two-photon (TP) fluorophores including hemicyanine, such as Foster resonance energy transfer (FRET). In addition, the author also focused on the application of such fluorescent reagents in the detection or imaging of cations, anions, small neutral molecules, biological macromolecules and cellular microenvironment, as well as for subcellular localization and construction of dual response systems. And an example of how to use TP to achieve photodynamic therapy (PDT).
