Nanocatalysts based on Fenton or Fenton-like reactions to amplify intracellular oxidative stress have become a frontier research field for precise tumor therapy. However, the main conversion challenges are low catalytic efficiency, poor biocompatibility, and potential toxicity. Here, Tao Xutang and Liu Hong of Shandong University proposed a titanium-based material with good biocompatibility for cancer treatment.

Key points of this article:

1) The non-oxidized Mxene-Ti3C2Tx quantum dots (NMQDs-Ti3C2Tx) were successfully prepared by the self-designed micro-explosion method. Surprisingly, it has obvious inhibitory and killing effects on cancer cells, and has good biocompatibility with normal cells.

2) In addition, the inhibition rate of NMQDs-Ti3C2Tx on the xenograft tumor model can reach 91.9% without damaging normal tissues. In terms of mechanism, Ti3+ in NMQDs-Ti3C2Tx can react with H2O2 in the tumor microenvironment to efficiently produce excess toxic hydroxyl free radicals, increase the permeability of tumor microvessels, and synergistically kill tumor cells. This work will pave the way for the application of titanium-based materials as a promising and safer approach in tumor catalytic therapy.
