Professor Lei Jianping from Nanjing University reviewed the application research of multifunctional MOF heterostructure in enhancing cancer treatment.
Key points of this article:
(1) Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of molecular crystal materials, which are composed of clusters bridged by metal ions and organic linkers. By taking advantage of its synthetic tunability and structural regularity, MOFs can integrate nanoparticles or biomolecules into a single framework in a hierarchical manner, thereby achieving multifunctional applications. The heterostructure protected by MOF can not only improve the catalytic ability of the nanoparticle components, but also retain the biological activity of biomolecules. Therefore, the heterogeneous structure of multifunctional MOF has more significant advantages than single component in the field of cancer treatment.
(2) In the article, the author reviewed the general principles of nano-scale MOF heterostructure design, functional regulation and its biomedical applications in enhancement therapy in the past five years. The function of MOF heterostructure can be effectively controlled by designing various functional ligands, in situ growth or post-modification of nanoparticles and biomolecules. Subsequently, the author also introduced the application progress of multifunctional MOF heterostructures in the field of intensive cancer treatment, including photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and integration of diagnosis and treatment. Finally, the author also elaborated and looked forward to the challenges and future development opportunities in the field.
