Titanium carbide can be prepared by heating bone char and titanium dioxide in an electric furnace. Is an important component of cemented carbide. Used as cermet, it has the characteristics of high hardness, corrosion resistance and good thermal stability. It can also be used to make cutting tools. Used as a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry.

Titanium carbide is a typical transition metal carbide. Its bond type is composed of ionic bonds, covalent bonds and metal bonds in the same crystal structure, so titanium carbide has many unique properties. The crystal structure determines the basic characteristics of titanium carbide with high hardness, high melting point, wear resistance, and electrical conductivity. Titanium carbide ceramic is the most widely developed material among titanium, zirconium and chromium transition metal carbides.

It is produced by reduction in a horizontal carbon tube furnace or vertical carbon tube furnace under a hydrogen atmosphere at 1900-2300 ° C. Or use sponge titanium and carbon black as raw materials, mix sponge titanium (or titanium alloy, titanium scrap recovered from solid solution of carbide) and carbon black in proportion, and heat to 1500 ~ 1700 ℃ in high-purity hydrogen gas. 2. Direct carbonization of titanium metal
Titanium powder (reduced from sodium or decomposed from titanium hydride, 325 mesh or less) and carbon black are mixed and formed under a pressure of about 0.98 Pa. The material is then placed in a graphite container and heated to 1500 to 1700 ° C in a stream of high-purity hydrogen to infiltrate the carbon. The reaction temperature and holding time depend on the type of raw materials, particle size, and reaction performance.
3. Gas phase reaction method
The vapor of titanium tetrachloride and hydrogen containing hydrocarbons (methane, benzene, etc.) are mixed and sent to a substrate for depositing titanium carbide, which has been heated by induction or by other methods, and reacted to precipitate titanium carbide. The reaction conditions such as the concentration ratio of the reaction gas, the reaction temperature, and the flow rate of the gas supply are different, and the morphology of the precipitated titanium carbide is also different.
